After banishment from his settlement in a brutal winter and facing likely death, Roger Williams flees into the wilderness, where the Wampanoag Indians rescue him. As a result of his spiritual struggle, he founds Rhode Island and leads a revolution in religious freedom. Williams calls for “Soul Liberty,” the bedrock principle that the sacred beliefs of Americans cannot be dictated by a government or official church. As he continues to lead their new colony in the wilderness, Williams also tries to negotiate peace as tensions rise between English colonists and Native Americans.
